Ai Group welcomes the Government’s response to the Research Infrastructure Roadmap and the Investment Plan. It is especially pleasing to see the commitment to research. This is a long-term investment in the vital infrastructure and capability necessary for Australia to realize the potential benefits of our transforming economy,” Ai Group Chief Executive, Innes Willox, said.

“Ai Group has long championed the need to broaden and deepen the STEM skill base across the economy. This involves increased participation and activity in all sectors of education.

“The research community currently supports 150,000 jobs. This is expected to grow with spill over benefits realized across the economy,” Mr Willox said.

This funding reinforces the importance of the development of STEM skills as identified in the COAG STEM Partnership Forum Report which was chaired by Dr Alan Finkel. Mr Willox was a member of the committee that prepared that Report.

In recognition of the importance of research to Australia’s economic and social development the Government announced an additional investment of $1.9bn over 12 years in the Budget for Research Infrastructure. This investment is on top of the $2.3bn announced as part of NISA in 2015 and the recent $259m for super-computing and astronomy.
